10 Web Series You Should Check Out!

Notwithstanding the daunting barriers imposed on these filmmakers, it is refreshing, perhaps that at least the world wide web hopefully remains the terrain – the bastion – where these talented individuals can bring their work to a targeted audience.

The growing base for web series is a positive sign and one that we throw our every weight behind. In no particular order, and as part of filmclique’s continued support for these series, we highlight the first set of 10 black webisodes out there that have been making the headlines for some time now.

In this regard we at filmclique share in the aspirations of these hardworking filmmakers who are fighting tooth and nail to showcase their diverse perspectives on the representations of black culture and people in the popular media and hence exhibit their work to audiences that can appreciate them.

1. The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl. Created by Issa Rae, this follows the title character and friends as she navigates through life, love and awkward situations. Check out the official site of the series at here.
2. Osiris: The Series. Created by Donnie Leapheart, Osiris is a new 10-episode action/thriller Web Series featuring mystery, espionage and gritty crime fiction. The series follows the title character “Osiris”, a man with an eternally extended warranty on life. He can never stay dead. If killed, he resurrects in EXACTLY 37 minutes, every time. Each episode features a jaw dropping cliffhanger in the vein of classic shows like True Blood, Lost and 24! Check out the website.
3. The Girls Bathroom. The Girls Bathroom, by Darralyn Huston, is a new web series that centers around four affluent teenage girls – Blondie, Brownie, Noir, and Red – who are entering their senior year of high school. The web series is one of few media programs that spotlights young black women and gives them the opportunity to develop as actors. Check out the website.
4. BREACH. DSBC is aiming to portray African and Caribbean people in a new, positive and empowered light via entertainment as theatre, magazine, drama, music etc. and Media. Check out the website.
5. 12 Steps To Recovery. Created by Tony Clomax, this is a romantic comedy about New York City actor & jingle writer Parrish Diaz who gets dumped by his corporate girlfriend and his friends Blue and Dani come to his rescue by setting him up on 12 blind dates. Healing a broken heart, one step at a time. It’s Sex and The City meets Curb Your Enthusiasm with some cinnamon and spice.

7. Touye Pwen (Kill Point). Created by R. L Scott, four friends who grew up on the mean streets of New York find themselves in Los Angeles through horrid circumstances. All members of a notorious gang called “The Strap Set”, they set their sights on taking over the cities criminal underworld. But every action has it’s price, as they soon make more enemies than they bargained for. But everything isn’t what it seems and friends become enemies, while enemies become friends. Rated R. 8. Compulsions. By Bernie Su, Compulsions is the internal character story of Mark Sandler (Craig Frank), an admitted Sadist leading a life with a dull desk job. At night, he channels his inner compulsions as a professional interrogator, brutally and psychological extracting bits of crucial information from his “clients”. Check out the website.

9. Celeste Bright. Created by Sonya Steele, this dramatic web series follows investment banker Celeste, a woman who plays by her own rules until an unsavory client makes her a target of the FBI. Follow her journey as she navigates the dangers of Wall Street and the mean streets. Check out the website.
10. The Misadventures of Clayton Thomas, by Clayton Thomas is simply hilarious comedy straight out of ATL.Clayton Thomas’ goal when he hits the stage is for audiences to experience life from his point of view, while splitting their stomachs open in the process. Clayton Thomas’ comedy is derived from his life, speaking on childhood, family life, political views, and his everyday life. Clayton began doing comedy at the tender age of 18, becoming one of the youngest comedians on the Detroit comedy circuit. Check out the website.
