By Ann Mamie | May 6, 2013 | Music, Reviews, Trailers | No comments

rihanna-777-tour-london

The documentary for Rihanna’s November 2012 777 tour aired today on Fox. Dozens of journalists and contest-winning fans pack into a 777 airliner to accompany Rihanna on the 7 day, 7 city, 7 concert around-the-world tour.

Not a bad way to promote her 7th album: Unapologetic.

The group hop to Mexico City, Toronto, Stockholm, Paris, Berlin, and London, before the final show in New York.

A snippet from each show includes performances of hits like Phresh Off the Runway, Umbrella, Stay, and Diamond. Rihanna says in the documentary, “I really love making music. I enjoy it.”

Melissa Harris-Perry Talks ‘Black Hair’ on MSNBC

By Ann Mamie | June 11, 2012 | Music, Trailers, TV | 2 Comments

Once again… we’re talkin’ bout good and bad hair.

Along with Spike Lee’s ‘Straight and Nappy’ musical piece in School Daze (1988) and Chris Rock’s Good Hair documentary (2009), African Americans’ hair issues lingered for decades in the media. With each generation, comes new epiphanies of “how I never knew what my real hair looked like” and “how I discovered my own hair could be beautiful.” It’s a wonder why we don’t keep our young black girls far away from the television. At least, so that we don’t have to have this same conversation about black hair and beauty as each generation of women comes of age.

Clearly, the African American woman’s psyche and self-esteem is deeply affected by too many media images of black women with long weaves of straight hair. It also stems from parents living in white neighborhoods, putting children in all white schools, and having to explain to those children why their unique appearance compared to the rest of the kids they grow up with is beautiful and special despite being the outlier.

“There’s a lot of profit to be made from that pain” said Melissa Harris-Perry, Tulane University political science professor, author, and columnist for The Nation magazine.

On her MSNBC show, she sat down with actress Nicole Ari Parker of Broadway’s Streetcar Named Desire, University of Pennsylvania professor Anthea Butler, cultural critic Joan Morgan, and CurlyNikki.com founder Nikki Walton to discuss the economics and politics of black hair.

He’s an orphan living with his mean stepfather and not-so-bright stepbrothers (sound familiar?!), and his dream is to finally be recognized. But everything changes when he meets Kadee, the amazing singer and daughter of a music mogul who also wants the world to see her true talent. Will their incredible voices be heard once they team up?

Rags, the Nickelodeon Original movie starring Keke Palmer and Max Schneider premieres this Monday May 28 @ 8pm EST.

A ‘Real Housewives of Atlanta’ Soundtrack?

By Ann Mamie | December 24, 2011 | LOL, Music, News, TV | 5 Comments

For better or worse, auto-tunes has made it possible for everybody to have a song — including this latest from Real Housewives of Atlanta’s Sheree Whitfield titled:

‘Who Gon’ Check Me Boo?’

Some people call it a Nene Leakes diss, with lyrics alluding to their RHOA Season 4 drama…

**Before you say anything else to me, go and fix your grill
**Saying that you’re rich but I know it’s all a mirage…

Listen to Sheree’s new single below.

Amateur – Norwegian Lasse Gjertsen Hyperactive Editing Style

By Ben Daité | July 19, 2011 | Film, Filmmaking, Music | No comments

Is this any different from Michael Gondry’s?

Lasse himself had this to say about his style:

And now; to you people saying I’m ripping off Michel Gondry: I’ve seen his video with the drumkit called Drumb and Drumber. It’s here on youtube somewhere. His video and my video are different because of one very important detail: Gondry filmed himself doing drumming sequences and LOOPED them, while I hit each drum and piano chord seperately and edited them together. This is a very big difference if you have any idea about video editing. Actually, there is a short sequence of 5 sec where he does cut the beat, but I didn’t notice this until recently, which makes me an idiot. But I still don’t think it’s a rip off, only similar. SO one question to you guys: If I write a song which includes the words “love” and “tight”, am I ripping off The Beatles?? :P I met Michel Gondry in Milan, Italy and asked him. He didn’t really give me a clear answer, but it seemed like he thought so. Either that or he didn’t like my clothes. Lol.

Javier Colon Wins NBC’s ‘The Voice’

By Ann Mamie | July 3, 2011 | Music, News, TV | 23 Comments

Acoustic soul singer Javier Colon was recently announced the winner of NBC’s singing competition The Voice. Along with the title, he received $100,000 and a recording contract with Universal Republic Records.

The show differs from American Idol in that the contestants on The Voice were picked sight unseen — solely on the basis of their voice. Also throughout the competition they are coached by pop stars. This season’s coaches were Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton.

[Video] Rihanna’s ‘Man Down’ Stirs Controversy

By Ann Mamie | June 6, 2011 | Music, News | 4 Comments
Rihanna

In her latest music video Man Down, singer Rihanna publicly shoots a man who sexually assaulted her. Now advocacy groups such as the Parents’ Television Council are calling for the video to not be shown on BET because it sends dangerous and violent messages to young viewers.

What follows is the familiar debate on censorship and the age-old question: Do artists have a greater responsibility to their art or to their audience?

‘Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels Of A Tribe Called Quest’ Coming To You Soon

By Ben Daité | June 3, 2011 | Festivals, Film, Music, Reviews, Trailers | No comments

After all the hype and controversy, Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest, was one of the most entertaining documentaries to play at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. It officially opens on July 8 in New York and Los Angeles and is scheduled for its local opening at the Tivioli Theatre on Aug. 5, according to the film’s distributors, Sony Pictures Classics.

The only way anyone may not find something enjoyable about this profound documentary is if you hate hip-hop and for that matter anything it stands for. People with an open mind who aren’t even fans will enjoy the interpersonal relationships, the great characters and the classic story of the hard work that goes into music making. And if you happen to be a fan of A Tribe or just a casual hip-hop fan, then Beats Rhymes & Life will keep your head bopping and your feet tapping for 95 minutes straight.

This much-tooted documentary chronicles the groundbreaking hip-hop group, A Tribe Called Quest. The Director, Michael Rapaport and crew traveled throughout 2008 with Q-Tip, Phife Dawg, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, and Jarobi White to record it. The result is an enthralling behind-the-scenes look at A Tribe, their journey and their contributions.

Master P’s Daughter To Star in Nickelodeon’s ‘How To Rock’

By Ann Mamie | May 24, 2011 | Music, News, TV | 4 Comments

Singer/actress/dancer Cymphonique Miller will star in Nickelodeon’s new music-themed comedy How to Rock, which is set to premiere in 2012. In How to Rock, Cymphonique will play the lead singer of a rock band. Hopefully, this show will do for Cymphonique, 14, what the Hannah Montana franchise has done for Miley Cyrus, giving her a platform to show off her acting and singing talents and to create a huge fan base. Like Miley whose country singer father Billy Ray Cyrus helped her navigate the entertainment biz, Cymphonique is also well-grounded in a family of fame. Her father is Percy Miller, who you probably know as rapper Master P. Her brother Romeo Miller is an actor/rapper who previously had his own self-titled show for a 53-episode run on Nickelodeon.

Check out Cymphonique’s music video, titled Daddy I’m a Rockstar:
