Storytellers like the griots of our past remain important to us because stories are the building blocks around which society is firmly anchored. They are where History, Customs and Traditions live. We acknowledge the huge role that Cinema plays in storytelling and that is why we at FilmClique throw our every weight behind our new griots who help to make our stories come to life through film.
Keeping one eye on Hollywood, Nollywood and the entertainment industry in general and another eye on the myriad independent filmmakers struggling to bring their stories to life, we strive to promote discussions that will enlighten us on the importance of these films, our understandings of the stories, and our continued learning about the crafts of filmmaking, screenwriting, and acting. We hope to promote a safe environment for conversation about issues in film and media, such as gender, race, and sexuality.
Through this humble and pared-down welcome space, we hope to rekindle and inspire a new generation of griots, who will not only be the architects of their own stories, but also be critical viewers of stories in order to reflect upon how these stories represent and affect our community. Primarily, we focus on the critical discussion of films that affect people of African Descent. Currently, this is limited to very tiny departments in colleges and universities or abandoned altogether. Yet since people around the world enjoy watching stories about people of color and also want to engage in the discussion of them, we feel a strong need to start and sustain the dialogue on films.
But a dialogue isn’t possible with only one perspective! So please join us in sharing.
